Sons of Speed is an event that no others try to attempt. Sons of Speed is a motorcycle race inspired by early 20th-century board-track racing, featuring stripped-down bikes with pre-1925 American V-Twin engines. Numerous modifications are done to handlebars, exhaust, fenders, fuel and oil tanks & no brakes…
Best explained by this, Sons of Speed, created by Billy Lane of Choppers Inc, is a motorcycle race inspired by early 20th-century board-track racing. Open to the public, races occur regularly at Daytona Bike Week, Biketoberfest and Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.
We all just attended Arlen Fatland’s 50th anniversary party at what is now Billy Lane’s home for Choppers Inc on Main Street in Daytona with Rod Woodruff, Jack & Lynn Deagazio, Toni Woodruff, Marilyn Stemp, Jeff Zielinski, Cory Ness, Christine LePera, john marcella, Jody Perewitz, Zach Ness, Dave Perewitz, Timothy Remus, Billy Lane, Erin Lane, and many more. I wanted to share all of these images because it was a gathering of some of the industries most wonderful people. I spoke with Billy Lane & his wife Erin for a while over a few days time regarding the shop being purchased from Arlen, and it’s future. I will keep tabs with Billy on this project so that I don’t report incorrect news, but the idea is to make it a cool lounge more or less, highlighting future builders while honoring the past, so with that said, I will sit back and await the shops future & in October, I will do another shoot there & show you how Billy & Erin’s goal has moved forward. More than a dozen vintage-powered race bikes re-created the board track races of the early 20th Century at the second Sons of Speed race on October 21. The event took place at New Smyrna Speedway during the Daytona Beach, Florida’s Biketoberfest.
This fresh yet nostalgic race event, instigated by Billy Lane of Choppers Inc., first ran in March of this year during Daytona Bike Week on New Smyrna’s banked half-mile asphalt track. That time, Brittney Olson took first, followed by Matt Harris in second and Shelly Rossmeyer-Pepe in third. Olsen sat out this round while her bike was being repaired but acted as Grand Marshal for this day.
